Dear Editor

I am an evacuee from the Calf Canyon fire. There is a high probability that the 1825 adobe I lovingly restored as a retirement home in Mora burned about 10 days ago. I evacuated in a small camper van with a few possessions, four changes of clothing and a week’s food. The state parks were made free to evacuees but filled quickly and then many got evacuated due to smoke or to being in the projected fire paths.

The Red River RV park offered me a free site with electric and even gave me tokens for the showers and laundry. George and Gloria are wonderful hosts and this park, with sites right on the river and ducks and ravens to feed, has saved my sanity. Living in limbo while the fire rages and grows, not knowing if there will be anything to go back to, is very difficult but the kindness of strangers has been a balm. Please recommend them to your vacationing friends!

We northern New Mexicans are blessed… we just need to take a little better care of our forests.

It seems we published incorrect information about Questa High School’s graduation, although we did our best to report accurately: we apologize for any misinformation or confusion. Also, we apologize to QHS Graduate Ben Chavez and his family. We altered his photo without permission. See Ben’s senior picture on page 4: congratulations, Ben!
