When Alyssah and Jose Duran moved back to Questa after the COVID-19 pandemic, they noticed a disconnect in local youth sports. Programs were available, but they often lacked accessibility for all children in the area. The Durans looked at this as an opportunity to find a way for all kids who wanted to participate in sports to do so. Eventually in 2023, the Durans founded Questa Active.
The non-profit organization’s core mission is to minimize the financial hurdles that prevent children from signing up for sports and encourage participation from children and families.
“We know how expensive youth sports can be, between equipment costs and registration fees,” Alyssah Duran said. “Questa Active’s vision has always been to keep kids active, support families and make sure every child in our area has equal opportunity to play sports.” The physical, mental, and social benefits of playing sports are also something the Durans feel passionate about.
Questa Active secured its official non-profit status under Localogy in 2023. Funded through community donations and grants, including support from organizations like the LOR Foundation, the program has been able to operate through 2026.
Since launching, the organization has supported multiple families by covering registration fees for sports like softball and baseball, purchasing essential gear such as cleats and basketballs, and providing uniforms for basketball and soccer teams.
The Durans also have a passion for coaching. They coordinate volunteer coaches and step in to lead teams when needed. They expressed a sincere gratitude for the cooperation of the Questa Independent School District (QISD), which allows teams to use school facilities for practices.
Looking ahead, the goals for Questa Active include growing the program by creating new initiatives focused on teaching fundamentals and fun. A major objective is to partner with the Village of Questa leadership to address the usage and safety updates required for public fields and facilities.
Most importantly, the founders stress the need for greater community awareness and involvement. They want more families to know that Questa Active is available to help support the financial burden that youth sports may bring and an overall encouraging atmosphere for kids wanting to try something new.
“If you are a family struggling with the financial burden of youth sports, please know we are here to help. If you want to volunteer, donate, or just see your community thrive, join us. We are determined to keep these kids playing, and we won’t stop until every child has a chance to succeed,” says Alyssah.
