At UNM-Taos, we believe the sky isn’t the limit—it’s our newest classroom. A recent UNM-Taos impact study has confirmed what we have long suspected: while the Cielo Centro Observatory is not yet built, it is poised to become a transformative engine for education, workforce development, and the local economy in Northern New Mexico.
Why Taos?
Our Klauer Campus sits at an elevation of nearly 7,000 feet, nestled in a high-desert landscape that offers some of the clearest, darkest skies in the nation. Shielded by mountain barriers and far from the reach of significant light pollution, Taos provides a pristine window into the cosmos. According to the study, conducted by UNM’s Bureau of Business & Economic Research (BBER), our region enjoys “good” air quality and clear skies over 80% of the year, making it a premier location for astronomical research and astrotourism.
Turning the Night Sky into a Classroom
The heart of this proposed project is a powerful 36-inch Dobsonian telescope—a generous gift from the King and Oglesbee families. Once constructed, this facility will provide our students and the 3,400 PreK-12 students aross Taos and Colfax counties with something often missing in rural education: hands-on access to world-class scientific equipment.
By integrating the observatory into our curriculum, we are:
- Expanding STEM Access: Providing immersive science experiences for underserved communities.
- Building Career Pathways: Creating internships and mentored research opportunities in data analysis and instrumentation.
- Cultivating a Future Workforce: Preparing New Mexicans for high-tech roles within the growing global space economy.
An Economic North Star
The benefits of Cielo Centro extend far beyond the telescope lens. The BBER study estimates that the construction phase alone will generate $8.5 million in total economic output and create dozens of temporary jobs. Once operational, we anticipate welcoming 4,000 visitors annually. This influx of visitors is expected to inject over $550,000 into the local economy each year, supporting small businesses and generating tax revenue for vital public services like infrastructure and safety.
Preserving Our Heritage
In Northern New Mexico, our connection to the stars is a matter of cultural heritage as much as scientific inquiry. The Cielo Centro Observatory reinforces UNM-Taos’s commitment to environmental stewardship. By championing dark-sky preservation, we aren’t just looking at stars; we are protecting the natural character of our home for generations to come.
Investing in Possibility
The Cielo Centro Observatory represents more than just a building; it is an investment in the people and possibilities of Taos. It aligns perfectly with our mission of inclusive excellence and sustainable development. We are proud to lead the way in making Northern New Mexico a regional hub for discovery, inspiration, and economic resilience.
As we move forward with this vision, we invite the community to look upward with us. The future of Taos is bright—and it starts in the dark.
