Connect with Local Produce and Neighbors This Market Season

By LISA ANN PHAM

As Questa Farmers Market opens its tenth season, we highlight our foundational mission: connect local food growers and producers to community neighbors. With rising fuel costs, unstable supply chains and an actively changing environment, regional access to fresh food will become increasingly important. The more we keep our intentional dollars in our local economy, the stronger we build and grow as a whole.

Questa Farmers Market, Cultivo’s Farm Stand and the Sangre de Cristo Market are tremendous resources bringing fresh and healthy food to the Questa corridor. Healthy food accessibility and affordability are driving forces for a resilient community. QFM works to maintain eligibility to participate in New Mexico food benefit programs, expanding access to local produce and fresh food sources to our community.

SNAP Benefits:
SNAP benefits may be used at the market as you would at the grocery store. Eligible items include produce, eggs, cheeses, breads, jams and other foods.

Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB):
DUFBs double your SNAP dollars at the market. When SNAP Dollars are redeemed at the Farmers Market, each SNAP $2 receives a double up token valued at $2 to use on fresh fruits and veggies.

BONUS BUCKS (BB, ends 8/31):

Through Aug. 31st, SNAP benefits TRIPLE with Bonus Bucks, to use with fresh fruit & veggies. Each SNAP $2 receives $2 BONUS dollars (plus the DUFB $2).

WIC & Senior Farmers’ Market Program:
WIC & Senior eligible participants may use farmers market benefits on fresh fruits, vegetables, & herbs (honey applicable to seniors only). Programs run July 1 – Nov 29. https://www.nmwic.org/fmnp/
All programs are available with participating vendors displaying signage, letting you know if they can accept SNAP, DUFB, WIC and more.

How does it work?

Bring your SNAP Card to the QFM information table for redemption. For every $2 SNAP redeemed, you will receive the dollar equivalent wooden SNAP token, silver DUFB tokens, and bonus bucks. For example, $10 in SNAP benefits gives $30 to spend in the market: $10 for SNAP products and $20 for fresh produce. No cash is redeemed or returned.

WIC & Senior cards are redeemed directly with participating vendors with signs displayed.
These programs not only expand access to healthy food close to source, they directly benefit our local economy and help sustain our area farmers and producers, keeping dollars circulating within and building a stronger community foundation.

Questa Farmers Market is built by and for the community. We host a place of connection to good food, lively music and each other. In this heightened time of unknown change, let our market be a space to breathe in the beauty and soul our beloved home offers.
