As June settles into Northern New Mexico, more people are heading out into the Carson National Forest to enjoy the mountains. But with more riders on the trails comes a bigger responsibility to take care of the land we live and recreate in. For James and Lauren at J&L Powersports, this month is all about “Leave No Trace” and making sure we can all keep riding for years to come. As Lauren puts it: “The future of trail access depends on how we treat the land today.”
Stick to the Path
It’s tempting to explore, but staying on designated trails is the only way to keep the forest healthy. When riders cut switchbacks or create their own routes, it can cause erosion and could leave a lasting impact on the landscape. If it’s wet enough to leave deep ruts, it’s too wet to ride. It’s also important to remember that these trails are shared. You’re likely to run into ranchers, cattle, and hikers. A good rule of thumb is to yield to others and always respect gates and fences. If you find a gate closed, leave it that way so livestock don’t end up where they shouldn’t be.
The “Real Talk” About Waste
We all know to pack out our trash, but there is one topic people usually avoid: bathroom waste. It’s a major issue in our camping and riding areas right now. Finding toilet paper or waste left behind on a trail isn’t just gross—it’s bad for the environment and disrespectful to the community. “Leave No Trace” includes everything. If you’re heading out for a long ride, plan ahead. Bring a small shovel and if you have to go, make sure to bury it properly (at least 6 inches deep) far away from any water, and always pack out your toilet paper. It’s a simple step that keeps our woods clean for everyone.
Protecting Wildlife and Preventing Fires
June is also a sensitive time for local wildlife. The Carson National Forest has seasonal closures in place for elk calving, and it’s vital to stay out of those areas so the calves stay safe. As the weather gets drier, fire safety becomes a top priority. Before you head out, double-check your spark arrestor. In these conditions, it only takes one spark to start a forest fire.
Why We Care
For the team at J&L Powersports, this isn’t just about selling or fixing machines. James and Lauren are locals who are raising their family right here in Northern New Mexico. They ride these same trails and want to make sure they stay open. “We aren’t just a business; we’re your neighbors,” they say. “We want our kids—and yours—to enjoy these ridges and valleys for decades to come.” By riding responsibly and leaving the land better than we found it, we can help make sure those trails stay open now and in the future. Let’s keep it local, keep it clean, and enjoy the ride.
