Questa Farmers Market: July Market Spotlight With Cultivo

By LISA ANN PHAM & GAEA MCGAHEE

Market Season is officially in full swing, and we are learning and adjusting every week. With many small farms in the northern region struggling with this year’s drought conditions, Questa Farmers Market has continued to bring fresh produce from local growers to our community. Early seasonal booths have been filled with plant starts for the home gardener, with our local farm and youth internship program Cultivo anchoring our community with a steady supply of bright greens and youthful energy.

This month features QFM’s anchor farm and partner program, Cultivo, to highlight what to expect this season.
Cultivo Farm Fresh Produce

Greetings from the Cultivo farm crew, our interns, apprentices, mentors, and teachers. We’re saying hello from Cerro Vista Farm and our weekly booth at Questa Farmers Market.

This season we had an early start thanks to several high tunnels at the farm. Beginning in late March and early April, we were able to start planting under cover and had fresh produce ready for market at the end of May. We’re still harvesting from greenhouses each week, bringing greens, turnips, radish and beets to market.

Out in the fields, we’ve been busy transplanting starts and seeds. Carrots, corn, and peas have been seeded and broccoli, lettuce, beets and more have been transplanted. While conditions have been hot and dry, the crops are coming along, and we’re grateful for the hard work of our crew and the support of drip irrigation systems.

Visitors to our market booth will find leafy greens, and other early-season produce. As summer progresses, we look forward to sharing tomatoes, broccoli, squash, cucumbers, and seasonal favorites. Later in August and into the fall, we anticipate carrots, cabbage, onions and storage crops.

We’re grateful to be part of the Questa Farmers Market community. Cultivo exists because young people are willing to learn the skills of farming in our unique high-desert environment, and because experienced mentors and teachers generously share their knowledge. Thank you for supporting local agriculture, local youth, and local food.

We look forward to sharing the season with you!

You can also find Cultivo at their Farm Stand pop-up Tues. 3 – 5:30 P.M. in front of Yoga Sala.
