Creative professionals across Taos County will have a unique opportunity to grow their businesses this May, as the Taos County Economic Development Department (TCED) hosts a free, weeklong series of creative entrepreneur business development workshops from May 9 through 18 at the TCA Stables Gallery in Taos.
Designed specifically for artists, makers, designers, freelancers, and other creative entrepreneurs, the workshop series will offer practical tools for navigating the challenges of running a small business—from understanding taxes and managing 1099 income to effective brand marketing and planning for retirement.
“The creative sector is a vital part of our community’s economy and quality of life,” said Taos County Economic Development Director Jessica Stern. “This workshop series is about providing the tools, knowledge, and support creatives need to grow their businesses and thrive right here in northern New Mexico.”
Led by industry professionals, the sessions will cover a range of topics. Highlights of the series include:
- “Building Your Financial Future” and “Managing Uneven Income & Multiple Revenue Streams” on Saturday, May 10
- One-on-one financial management sessions on Sunday, May 11 (limited availability)
- “Branding and Marketing Strategies” on Tuesday, May 13
- “What is the Creative Economy?” with the New Mexico Creative Industries Division on Thursday, May 15
- “Business Resources in Taos That You Need to Use!” and “Navigating Business Taxes in New Mexico” on Saturday, May 17
Featured presenters include financial advisor Tamara Bates, branding experts from Benthouse Creative, and local professionals such as Anwar Kaelin from the Taos Small Business Development Center, and Sierra Duran of Rio Grande CPA PC. Creative Industries Division Coordinator Arlen Nelson at the New Mexico Economic Development Department, will also be on hand to share resources available through the state’s newly launched creative industries division.
The series kicks off Friday, May 9, with a Creative Entrepreneur Exhibition Opening Reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Stables Gallery,., open to the public. The exhibition will showcase works by creatives who participated in earlier workshops across the county in 2024, offering an additional opportunity for professional growth and community engagement.
All workshops will be held at the Stables Gallery at 133 Paseo del Pueblo Norte, near the Taos Centerfor the Arts. While attendance is free, an RSVP is required, particularly for access to meals provided during select sessions.
