“Galentine’s Day” is a day for women to celebrate their female friendships. It complements Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to express appreciation, love, and genuine gratitude for those special female relationships. Plan to attend the Questa-area Norteñas Connect (formally Women of Impact) Galentine’s Day Celebration on Feb. 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Living Word Ministries Fellowship Hall. Gather your girlfriends together, wear something pink, and just show up.
In 2010, Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knope on the TV program, Parks and Recreation, came up with the idea for Galentine’s Day. Leslie explained on the show that “love isn’t limited to romance, that women need to celebrate their female friendships each year on Galentine’s Day, February 13.” She emphasized the idea that “women uplifting other women is powerful and meaningful, that community and mutual support make life better.”
That is what Norteñas Connect is all about! This year’s First Annual Galentine’s Day Celebration is a way for local ladies, single gals, those who are widowed or living alone, and young women to get together, make new friends and rekindle friendships. Ladies celebrating ladies.
The event is free with interactive activities and experiences that encourage new connections and matchless memories. There’s food and fun to share, and a special focus on how the collective potential of local women can make a positive impact on the economic vitality and social fabric of the community.
Mark your calendar and plan to attend, and don’t come alone! Bring your BFFs and/or your neighbor who doesn’t get out much. Reach out to those lady friends who live alone or don’t have a partner; personally invite the young women you know who may need a little nudge to realize they’re included, too! Join the Galentine’s Day Celebration and come in from Red River and San Cristobal, make the trip from Amalia and Costilla, show your representation from Sunshine Valley, El Rito, and every neighborhood in Questa.
Norteñas Connect is a welcoming community gathering of women of all ages and backgrounds who get together every-other month for activities and the sharing of food to meet new women, learn how they can support each other, and collaborate around solutions that resolve community challenges. Norteñas is a fun, free, and festive way for the women of northern Taos County to literally “connect” socially, professionally, culturally, and economically, enhancing themselves and their communities. Because, when women connect, communities thrive.
