Kit Carson Electric Cooperative (KCEC) celebrated the groundbreaking of its Amalia II Solar & Battery facility on Tuesday, April 22, a significant step in the cooperative’s pursuit of clean energy.
The project, a collaboration between KCEC, wholesale energy supplier Guzman Energy, the Rio Costilla Cooperative Livestock Association (RCCLA), and renewable energy developer Luminace, will include an 8.75-megawatt solar photovoltaic array. This will be coupled with an 8.75-megawatt, 17.5 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system. The facility will be located near KCEC’s existing Amalia I solar installation.
Local, state, and federal representatives joined community members for the groundbreaking ceremony, which coincided with Earth Day 2025 and its theme, “Our Power, Our Planet.” Speakers at the event highlighted the project’s importance in advancing renewable energy and its benefits for the local community
KCEC stated that the Amalia II facility supports its objective of achieving 100 percent daytime solar energy and its broader ambition of transitioning to fully renewable energy sources. The cooperative underscored its commitment to the national goal of tripling clean electricity capacity by the year 2030.
