A massive rainstorm swept through northern Taos County late Oct. 15 into the early hours of Oct. 16, flooding homes and forcing the closure of a key roadway between Questa and Red River.
Multiple residents across the Questa region reported waking between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. to find water inside their homes as heavy rainfall overwhelmed drainage and runoff swelled into residential areas.
Between the evening of October 15th and the early morning of October 16th, a weather station in the Pinabete area recorded a total of 2.2 inches of rain. Specifically, 0.74 inches fell between 10:00 PM and 12:00 AM, and an additional 1.5 inches fell between 12:00 AM and 4:05 AM.
Village of Questa crews worked through the morning clearing downed branches and debris from roadways to restore access and reduce hazards.
State Road 38 — the main route connecting Questa and Red River — was initially shut down after several mudslides blocked travel, according to the Taos County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities advised drivers to take alternative routes along the Enchanted Circle loop.
A 7 a.m. update from officials stated that one lane of the highway had reopened to alternating traffic, though delays were expected while crews continued clearing debris. The road fully reopened later in the day.
In the future, residents who experience flooding are urged to take precautions for future storms. Recommendations include documenting damage with photos for insurance purposes, moving valuables to higher ground, keeping drains and gutters clear and preparing emergency supplies. Residents are also advised to ventilate and disinfect affected areas quickly after flooding to prevent mold and other health risks.
