OBITUARY: Benjamin Garcia

Benjamin Garcia, 90, of Questa, N.M. was called home to our Heavenly Father Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023 with his family by his side. He was born Dec. 16, 1932 to Herman and Eliza Garcia.


Benjamin, aka “Ben,” was the third oldest child among nine siblings. At the age of 9, his father passed away and his mother married Aurelio Maestas, his stepfather.


Ben married the love of his life Isabel Herrera in 1953 before leaving to the Army to serve his Country in the Korean War. He was a hard-working individual who turned his talents into an entrepreneurship. In the 80s he and his brother-in-law merged their talents and created H&G Construction. He also started his own plumbing company he ran for many years.


He is preceded in death by his brothers Nelson (Eutemia), Robert (Orlinda), Louie (Mary), Bonifacio Garcia; sisters Ida Lopez, and Charlotte (Eusebio) Salazar; and stepsister Grace (Alfredo) Rivera.


He is survived by his wife Isabel Garcia; sisters Lillian (Roger) Ortega, Dora (late Arsenio) Brito, and brother Roger Maestas; three children: Germaine (Gene) Sanchez, Louise (Roger) Archuleta, and Benjamin (Frances) Garcia, Jr.; seven grandchildren, Ruben Salazar, late Nicole Salazar, Patricia (James) Raschel, Benjamin (Anna) Garcia, Devonne (Michael) Montoya, late Issac and Issiah Garcia; seven great grandchildren, Christopher Elliott, Avi, Koi, Rio Garcia, Memphis, Michael, Maverick, and Mason Montoya.
Rosary was recited Monday, Feb. 6, 2023, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Questa, with burial to follow at El Pueblito Cemetery.


The family of Benjamin Garcia has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home of Taos.
