Questa̕s Colorful Summer Reading
Excitement is building as the Questa Public Library prepares to launch its summer reading program, inviting readers and creators of all ages to dive into this year’s theme: “Color Our World.”
The fun begins on Friday, June 6, at 9:30 a.m. with Questa Truckin’, a thrilling opportunity for kids to explore a variety of trucks, chat with drivers about how their vehicles are used, and vote for their favorite. The driver of the winning truck will receive a gift certificate for a meal at a local restaurant—a well-earned reward for a standout ride!
The program will continue every Tuesday and Friday through July 18, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., offering a fresh lineup of colorful crafts and activities led by community members. Participants can weave on a loom, decorate and fly kites, paint, create graffiti chalk art, enjoy storytelling, and even meet donkeys!
Adding a historical twist, experts from the New Mexico Archaeological Society will introduce kids to rock art, highlighting its cultural significance and ancient origins. Our young artists will then create their interpretations of petroglyphs and pictographs, connecting past and present through hands-on creativity.
Each child will also personalize their own summer program T-shirt, turning it into a wearable keepsake of their summer adventures. Plus, they’ll explore an array of new books, expanding their reading horizons, while journaling about their experiences.
Best of all? The program is completely free! While it’s designed especially for kids ages 4 to 10, everyone is welcome—no one will be turned away.
Summer reading is more than just fun—it’s essential. Studies show that children who continue reading throughout the summer maintain stronger literacy skills, improve comprehension, and develop a lifelong love of books. Journaling their experiences will help kids reflect, express themselves, and build valuable writing skills along the way.
On July 18, the program will conclude with an unforgettable fiesta, filled with awards, celebration, and plenty of surprises for participants. Questa’s young explorers are in for a colorful and inspiring summer!

Hillerman Book Signing Event
Fans of Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee, and Bernadette Manuelito will have the pleasure of meeting author Anne Hillerman at the Questa Public Library on June 21 from 1 to 3 p.m. at a reception and book signing for her latest novel, “Shadow of the Solstice.” This book is the tenth in her award-winning series.
Ms. Hillerman has continued the stories of the Navajo detective stories her late father Tony Hillerman made popular while making one of his minor characters, Navajo police officer Bernadette Manuelito, her central protagonist.
This event will also be the opportunity to celebrate the reopening of the library building after it closed due to a water main break in January. The library has continued to serve the public since then from the adjacent Questa Youth Center building.
“We are very excited for Ms. Hillerman’s visit,” said Library Director Sharon Nicholson, “and the timing couldn’t be better to reintroduce our community to all the services we can once again offer.”
