For more than a century, 4-H has offered children opportunities to learn by doing. With clubs in all 50 states and more than 80 countries, it remains the largest youth development organization in the nation, serving kids ages 5 to 19 through hands-on educational programs.
In Questa, the long-standing Questa Achievers 4-H Club continues that tradition under the guidance of local leader Denise Winslow-Lawrence, along with countywide leaders Monica Gonzales-Wilder and Will Jaremko-Wright of the Taos County Extension Office. The club meets about once a month, offering free membership and activities that range from field trips to arts and crafts.
“4-H helps youth develop life skills in areas like STEM, agriculture, public speaking and community service,” Winslow-Lawrence said. “It’s a supportive and fun group where kids can build confidence, compassion and leadership skills with guidance from mentors.”
Club members say their favorite parts of 4-H are caring for animals, working on projects and enjoying time with friends.
“I like taking care of my animal — a chicken — the most. And tubing at Red River Ski Area was my favorite activity,” said DJ, a novice member.
“I like working with and raising animals,” said Jeremiah, a junior. “I like when we write thank you letters together as a club to the buyers from the auction.”
Other favorites included fly-tying, arts and crafts, and a group hike up Columbine.
Leadership team members also highlighted how 4-H has helped them grow.
“My favorite thing we did as a club this year was learning how to tie flies for fly fishing,” said JT, the club’s president. “What I like most about being president is improving my leadership skills and helping the younger members.”
Vice president Olivia said she enjoys showing her rabbit and attending Youth Get Away, while Secretary Amber said she likes writing down meeting notes and connecting with new people.
The Questa Achievers will hold their first sign-up meeting of the year Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Questa Public Library. Families who cannot attend can call Winslow-Lawrence at (575) 200-9947 for more information.
