Questa Rallies For Special Olympian’s Cancer Battle

The Apodaca family is asking for prayers and support as their son Raulie, a beloved member of the Questa community, undergoes aggressive treatment for Stage 3 metastatic testicular cancer.

Raulie Apodaca, 28, was born with Down syndrome and has long been known as a beacon of joy and positivity to those around him. A proud Special Olympics athlete, uncle, and friend, Raulie is described by his sister Desiree Ortega as someone who “brings laughter, peace, and kindness wherever he goes.”

Raulie was first diagnosed with testicular cancer in December 2024 and underwent surgery in Denver to remove a large tumor. Initially, the family was hopeful that the operation would mark the end of his battle. However, recent follow-up scans revealed that the cancer has spread to his lymph nodes in his pelvis, abdomen, chest, and neck.

“He was joking, dancing, and competing in the Special Olympics not long ago,” Desiree said. “Now he’s fighting the biggest battle of his life.”

Raulie is now undergoing a rigorous chemotherapy regimen at a hospital in Denver. The treatment involves five-day chemotherapy infusions followed by two-week recovery periods, for a total of four cycles and 20 rounds of chemotherapy.
His parents, Raul and Carla Apodaca, have been at his side throughout the journey, traveling between New Mexico and Colorado for his care.

The family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help offset the costs of medical expenses, travel, lodging, and meals—expenses not fully covered by insurance. The campaign also serves as a space for updates, gratitude, and prayer requests.
“We’re asking for prayers first—for strength, healing, and peace for Raulie,” said Desiree. “We’re also humbly asking for any financial support to help our parents be alongside him every step of the way.”

Raulie recently completed his second cycle of chemotherapy and responded better than expected, thanks to additional IV hydration support from his care team. His third cycle began two weeks later.

“Your generosity has made it possible for our parents to stay in Denver with him and get him the care he needs,” Desiree wrote in a recent update. “He continues to fight every day with a smile on his face.”

The family continues to share their message of faith and determination, rallying behind the hashtag #RaulieStrong.
