Questa Secures Nearly $900K For Cabresto Road Improvements

The Village of Questa has secured nearly $900,000 in grant funding for improvements to Cabresto Road and is awaiting approval of an additional grant later this year.

The most recent award — a $226,000 grant from the New Mexico Department of Transportation —was officially accepted by the Village of Questa toward the end of June. That brings the total funding so far to $866,000, including earlier grants of $548,000 and $92,000. All funds have been awarded through the New Mexico Local Government Road Fund, which supports municipal transportation infrastructure projects.

While the funding has been celebrated, some residents have expressed frustration with delays in the project’s progress. Village officials said the timeline has been impacted by both seasonal and procedural factors.

“Asphalt can’t be mixed or laid during the colder months,” said Village Clerk Valerie Vigil. “But the larger issue is that construction cannot begin until planning and design are complete — and that’s a process that typically takes six months to a year for each phase.”

Officials emphasized that planning, design, and construction are often handled as separate phases under state funding procedures, which has contributed to the slow pace of visible progress.

Despite the delays, the Village of Questa remains optimistic that the Cabresto Road upgrades will move forward once design phases are completed and the remaining funding to be secured mid-July.
