For the second year in a row, the Mayfest in the Mountains event is taking place for Memorial Day weekend from May 23 through 25 at Brandenburg Park in Red River. The event pivots away from the Memorial Day Biker Rally culture following the 2023 biker gang shootout, which effectively ended the town’s involvement in hosting a rally.
A release from the Town of Red River says Mayfest in the Mountains is aimed at celebrating the spirit of community, patriotism, and outdoor fun in the stunning setting of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
While the reinvention of the town’s identity for the Memorial Day weekend continues to be a priority for the Town of Red River through Mayfest in the Mountains, others remain committed to Reviving the Ride.
The Motherlode Saloon in Red River has created a “Revive the Ride” Facebook event for May 22 through 26. The event reads, “Gear up for the Annual Memorial Day Motorcycle Event in Red River, NM | Let’s REVIVE THE RIDE!” The event includes live music, a bike show (custom, classic/ vintage, touring and overall), Ms. Motherlode Contest with a $1,000 cash prize, karaoke, biker games, fun run, and military appreciation gestures through the weekend.
The facebook event has 644 RSVPs, showing strong interest from across the region. While the event is happening separately from Mayfest in the Mountains, the Town is moving forward with a family-friendly weekend event. Some of the highlights for Mayfest in the Mountains include a Wall of Honor Display, Cornhole Tournament, Wonders on Wheels from the New Mexico Dept. of Cultural Affairs, and a family fun zone.
“Mayfest in the Mountains is one of Red River’s newest events, bringing together families, music lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts for a weekend of celebration and fun,” said Linda Calhoun, Mayor of the Town of Red River. “Whether you’re here for the music, the tournaments, or just to soak in the mountain atmosphere, this festival has something for everyone.”
While the town’s new direction remains steadfast, in past interviews, Mayor Calhoun has made it clear that all are invited to Red River for Memorial Day weekend, but says that violence and gang activity is not.
Ending the release, the town says visitors are encouraged to explore Red River’s vibrant local businesses, which will be hosting additional activities, specials, and entertainment throughout the weekend.
