Revive the Ride Roars Back into Red River, Honoring Veterans Over Memorial Weekend

The sound of motorcycles once again echoed through the streets of Red River this Memorial Day weekend as hundreds of riders gathered for the return of the Revive the Ride Motorcycle Rally, signaling renewed momentum for an event that faced uncertainty following violence in 2023.

The annual Memorial Day gathering, long considered an unofficial kickoff to summer tourism in the mountain community, had seen reduced participation after a 2023 shooting involving rival motorcycle gangs cast doubt over the rally’s future. In the aftermath, the Town of Red River stepped back from involvement in the longtime tradition, leaving questions about whether the event would continue.

This year, however, crowds returned in force, with motorcycles lining downtown streets and visitors filling local businesses as organizers worked to restore the rally’s place in the holiday weekend.

Planning efforts for the event were led jointly by the Motherlode Saloon and Texas Reds Steakhouse, which helped bring Revive the Ride back to Red River.

While the rally centered on motorcycles and community gathering, organizers and attendees also emphasized reverence for military service members during the Memorial Day weekend. Riders participated in efforts to raise money for the Cerro Veterans of Foreign Wars post, while veterans were honored through several community tributes.

The Red River Convention Center hosted the Wall of Honor Display from May 22 through May 24, which travels the country honoring more than 6,500 U.S. service members who lost their lives in combat from Desert Storm through Operation Enduring Freedom.

Rally festivities included various contests including tattoo contests, oldest rally shirt contests, and the annual Ms. Motherlode Contest, where Questa resident Samantha Griffin was crowned this year’s Ms. Motherlode. Several participants competed for the title as part of the weekend’s entertainment, and organizers congratulated all contestants who took part.

In Questa, local business owner Frank Rael of Frank’s Eats & Sweets established a Wall of Honor at the convention center to recognize area veterans. The display served as a focal point for remembrance during the holiday weekend.

Questa held its 22nd annual Healing Field on Sunday, May 25. Democratic gubernatorial candidate Deb Haaland attended the ceremony, where she spoke with photojournalist Audrianah León about the significance of Memorial Day and honoring veterans where she thanked veterans and their families for the service and sacrifice.

For many in northern New Mexico, the turnout represented more than a successful holiday event; it marked a hopeful return after years of uncertainty, as businesses, residents and visitors welcomed both the crowds and a renewed sense of community to kick off what is expected to be a busy tourist season. But amid the rumble of motorcycles and holiday festivities, the weekend also served as a reminder of Memorial Day’s deeper meaning of honoring the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation. With veterans recognized through ceremonies, memorial displays and fundraising efforts, organizers said Revive the Ride reflected both community pride and a shared commitment to remembering those who served.
