Apex is a new action adventure/suspense film that stars in and is produced by Charlize Theron and her production company Secret Menu, and it delivers tense edge of your seat thrills and has you guessing what’s going to happen next.
Apex is a nice popcorn movie that’s light on story but heavy on action and suspense; you may forget it immediately after you watch it but that’s ok it’s a nice summer action movie you can enjoy in the moment.
When I first started streaming Apex I didn’t know what kind of action movie I was getting because it borrows from a lot of the classics.
The Cliffhanger Homage: The first one we get is an homage to the movie Cliffhanger where we see our heroine Charlize Theron and her husband played by Eric Bana are free climbing up a perilous looking mountain in Norway called “The Troll Wall” and we see a tragic accident with Eric Bana’s character which was very similar to what happened in Cliffhanger.
The Cat-and-Mouse Shift: So after this tragedy Charlize Theron decides to go to Australia to spread her late husband’s ashes in his native land. But along the way she encounters a man who turns out to be not what she expects him to be.
Here’s where the movie shifts again to a more cat and mouse type of film that is very reminiscent of the movie The Most Dangerous Game mixed with the film Psycho and Silence of the Lambs.
I won’t give up much more of the plot other than that but like I said Apex is a classic summer popcorn film that really goes out of its way to showcase the beautiful Australian outback and its diverse climate and ecosystems.
How much you enjoy this film will depend on how you feel about these types of summer action films.
