Summer Reading Program Inspires Young Readers

June was truly a month of reading as the community’s Summer Reading Program brought young readers together for a season filled with books, discovery, and excitement. Despite an unexpected setback at the outset, the program proved that enthusiasm and creativity can overcome even the trickiest challenges.

Organizers faced an early hurdle when Amazon was unable to deliver a selection of program-related books. While the delay could have stalled plans, staff quickly pivoted, turning to the library’s existing collection. Fortunately, shelves were rich with engaging materials, allowing participants to dive into fascinating topics such as dinosaurs, snakes, insects, and bees. The variety ensured that every child could find something to spark their curiosity.

The response from participants was enthusiastic. Children eagerly checked out books, immersing themselves in stories and facts about the natural world. All of that reading paid off, as reading every day earned kids tickets for entry into the grand prize drawing held on June 30. By the end of the month, a flurry of entries reflected just how committed these young readers had become.

Prizes added extra excitement to this year’s Library Fiesta. Among the most sought-after items were bicycles, remote-controlled sand buggies, a pink remote-controlled Camry, and a badminton/volleyball set. In the end, there were prizes for all, ensuring every participant shared in the celebration.

Speaking of prizes, some of the most memorable moments weren’t items at all, but experiences. Who didn’t love seeing kids delightfully touching creepy crawlers, checking the library garden for bugs and insects, exploring bees up close, admiring giant trucks, marveling at blowup dinosaurs, and even wearing a python around one’s neck? These hands-on moments brought learning to life and left lasting impressions.

And there’s more! The excitement continues in July with an awesome lineup of programs. Families are encouraged to drop everything and head to the library for Dino Graffiti with Mark Lewis Wagner, a lively chalk art day where kids help create a giant dinosaur mural together. Additional programs include Ice Age America with Ziggy, Happy Birthday America with Wonders on Wheels Museum, and an outdoor adventure at Eagle Rock Lake with Claire Cóte. Expect more surprises and delicious snacks! For more information, call the Questa Library at (575) 586-2023.
