In a powerful display of community support and solidarity, the Taos Community Foundation and Kit Carson Electric Cooperative have come together to support local federal employees recently impacted by unexpected layoffs. At a time when uncertainty and financial strain are affecting households across the region, this partnership is stepping up to ensure that basic needs are met—and that public servants do not feel forgotten.
The collaboration was born out of a shared commitment to serve the unique needs of the Taos community. With deep roots in the area and a long history of working for the well-being of its residents, both organizations saw an opportunity to act quickly and compassionately in the face of a crisis with much uncertainty.
At the heart of their effort is a supermarket gift card program, developed as a direct response to the economic strain facing local families. The program provides laid-off federal workers with gift cards to help cover essential groceries, easing the burden of food insecurity while also sending a clear message: the community cares
“The gift cards may seem simple, but they carry a much deeper meaning,” said CJ Grace with the Taos Community Foundation. “They represent compassion, dignity, and a reminder that people in this town are not alone during difficult times.”
The program doesn’t just help with day-to-day necessities, it also symbolizes what can happen when local organizations combine their strengths for a greater cause. By tapping into their network of community partners, supporters, and donors, TCT and KCEC have created a safety net that extends beyond short-term relief.
“This is what community is all about,” said KCEC CEO Luis Reyes. “We are stronger when we come together. By working locally, we can respond quickly and effectively to challenges our neighbors are facing.”
The initiative has already made a meaningful impact, with affected families expressing deep gratitude for the timely support. For many, it’s not just the assistance that matters—but knowing that their struggles are recognized and that their community has their back.
