The 27th annual Taos Storytelling Festival will return Oct. 11 2025, bringing tales, music and community events to venues across Taos County.
Sponsored by SOMOS, the Taos based literary organization, the festival began in 1999 as a three-day event under a tent in Kit Carson Park. It has since evolved into a single-day celebration with workshops, community storytelling, a story swap, and performances by regional and national storytellers.
This year’s headliner is Albuquerque musician and storyteller Maestro Chuy Martinez. Martinez, a former migrant farm worker, draws on his experiences in the United Farm Workers Union and the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and ’70s to bring history alive through songs learned in migrant camps and at organizing meetings. His performances weave music, memory and culture into compelling narratives.
The festival kicks off at 10 a.m. with a workshop, “Creating Stories Quickly,” led by storyteller Eldrena Douma at the SOMOS office. Participants will work in groups and individually to craft original stories using simple techniques and props. The workshop is $30 for SOMOS members and $40 for nonmembers; students 18 and under are free. Pre-registration is required at (575) 758-0081.
A free Community Story Swap, hosted by the Storytellers of New Mexico, will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Hacienda Martinez, 708 Hacienda Road.
The main storytelling event begins at 6 p.m. at Talpa Community Center, 4 Archuleta Road in Ranchos de Taos. Performers include Sage Vogel, Celinda Reynolds Kaelin, Eldrena Douma, and Martinez, accompanied by a traditional Northern New Mexico dinner. Admission is $5 at the door.
