The Challenges and Rewards of 911 Dispatch

After 17 1/2 years behind the headset, Gilbert Romero, a 911 telecommunicator at the Red River Regional Dispatch Center, says the most meaningful part of the job is helping people on what may be the worst day of their lives.

“Serving your community and knowing you are providing help when people need it most” remains the most fulfilling aspect of the work, Romero said.

The job comes with significant challenges, including demanding and irregular schedules, a high-stress environment, low pay and ongoing staffing shortages — issues common in emergency communication centers nationwide.

As communities observe National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week from April 12-18, Romero said the recognition is vital to raising awareness about the role 911 professionals play.

“They are truly the lifeline for anyone in a life-threatening situation,” he said.

Romero also emphasized the importance of educating the public on how to properly use the 911 system. Callers should be prepared to quickly provide their location, a callback number and clear information about the emergency. It is also critical to answer questions and follow instructions from dispatchers, which can help first responders act more quickly and effectively.

Officials also remind residents to use 911 appropriately, reserving it for true emergencies so lines remain open for critical situations.

Romero recognized his colleagues at the Red River center — Jacklyn Romero, Christopher Hillsgrove, Damien Cronin and Alec Baron — for their dedication. He also acknowledged telecommunicators at Taos County Central Dispatch and Colfax County/Raton Dispatch for their collaboration and service across northern New Mexico.

Together, the agencies work to ensure timely, coordinated emergency response across the region, underscoring the critical role dispatchers play in public safety every day.
