As the Vida del Norte Coalition continues its monthly sector highlight in the Questa del Rio News, September turns the spotlight onto the local business community—and how Northern Taos County business owners are bridging local economics with youth wellness and substance misuse prevention.

Why the Business Sector Matters in Prevention

Under the Drug-Free Communities framework, youth substance misuse prevention relies on 12 distinct sectors of the community working in unison. The business sector plays a unique dual role: it provides the economic foundation of our villages and acts as a daily safeguard for our youth.

Local businesses support prevention efforts across Northern Taos County through several key avenues:

• Creating Safe First Employment Opportunities: Local jobs, apprenticeships, and summer work give teens a sense of agency, responsibility, and financial independence. Research shows that gainfully occupied youth with strong adult mentorship are far less likely to engage in high-risk behaviors.
• Upholding Responsible Sales & Retail Compliance: Merchants selling alcohol, tobacco, and vape products serve as the front line in preventing underage access. By strictly enforcing ID checks and supporting merchant education, business owners directly reduce access to harmful substances in our area.
• Sponsoring Positive Youth Environments: From sponsoring substance-free teen events, sports teams, and summer camps to contributing funding or supplies, local entrepreneurs actively invest in healthy outlets for local youth.
