Theater Students Shine at State One-Act Competition

The Questa High School theater program made its debut at the New Mexico Activities Association One-Act Play Competition in January, earning strong marks for acting and stage management while gaining valuable experience among schools from across the state.

The competition, hosted at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, brought together high school theater programs to perform one-act productions before judges and a large audience. For the Questa group, the event marked the first time the school has participated in the statewide competition.

Students performed in front of hundreds of audience members and received critiques from theater professionals and judges following their performance. In addition to performing, participants attended workshops focused on acting, stagecraft and other technical theater skills.

Questa High School received outstanding marks for both its acting performances and stage management during the event.
Director Kimber MacDonald said the experience provided students with an opportunity to grow artistically while representing their school on a statewide stage.

Students who participated in the competition included Hayley Cordova, Matthew Gallegos, Ysidro Garcia, Jeremiah Garcia, Michkayla Jadlocki, Marivel Martinez, Analiah Rael, Hailey Rael, Sophia Smith, Jade Vigil and Shane Vigil.

MacDonald says the program’s first appearance at the competition is an encouraging sign for the future of theater at Questa High School, with hopes the program will continue to grow and return to the event in the coming years.
