Voices: Stories of family, history, love, adventures, and misadventures as told by the people of our area…
“As I walked up the trail on an early spring morning I heard a loud rustling in the brush about 30 feet away. I grabbed my pup and started yelling and backing up…really fast. Within seconds, a large cat, probably a mountain lion, jumped out and took off down the slope while at the same time a deer leapt out and took off uphill. I guess we interrupted his breakfast. It was a total of probably 30 seconds, but seemed much longer!” – anonymous
The Questa Public Library is excited to announce the first “Voces de Nuestro País” (Voices of Our Place) story-sharing event at Questa Library on Oct. 11, 2-4 p.m. Come enjoy stories of family, history, love, adventures, and misadventures as told by the people of our area. On the second Saturday of each month, featured guests will be invited to share their stories at Questa Library. Michael Rael will host and curate this monthly gathering in collaboration with Voices of the Northern Rio Grande and Questa Library. Stories from these gatherings will become part of the digital community archive and be available to listen to via the library and online at QuestaStories.org.
As a backdrop to this new monthly story-sharing event, this year’s fall-winter visual library display will feature a new selection of historical images and a designated “Muro de la Memoria” (Wall in Memoriam) honoring the lives of those in our community who have passed. If you have a loved one who has passed, we would like to honor them in this display by featuring a photo of them or something they created or did in their life. When you bring these items, you will be asked to fill out a little information about the photo or item. We will have the copy machine and camera ready, if you prefer not to leave originals. You can drop off your memory items Friday or Saturday, Oct. 3 or 4 from 1-3 p.m. at Questa Library.
Images and audio recordings from “Voces de Nuestro País” story events and the Wall in Memoriam will be added to our local, virtual digital archive, a community resource created by collaborators Voices of the Northern Rio Grande, Questa Public Library and Manitos Community Memory Project. Voices of the Northern Rio Grande is a program of Localogy, a local nonprofit 501(c)3 that functions as a program-based community foundation in our rural area. Learn more about the community archive and listen to stories from community members at QuestaStories.org.
Come listen and look on Oct. 11 from 2-4 p.m. at Questa Library, as we kick-off “Voces de Nuestro País” our monthly story-sharing sessions. We hope you can join us! The new historical photos and Memory Wall display will be up through February 2026.
If you have a story you’d like to share, please let Michael Rael know. You can often find him at Raels’ Market or email him at rael870@gmail.com.
