Across Northern Taos County, youth substance misuse prevention isn’t just an individual or family responsibility it is a mission that requires support from every corner of our town. That is why the Vida del Norte Coalition brings together twelve different sectors of our community to protect our kids. Among these, the Government Sector plays a critical role in turning community goals into long-lasting protection.
Why Local Government Matters in Prevention
When we talk about the government sector, we mean our local town leaders, village staff, county officials, and public agency representatives. While community groups build awareness, the local government provides the practical support, infrastructure, and public policy needed to keep young people safe.
Local government partners make a real difference in three big ways:
- Creating Safer Communities: Municipal leaders help establish local policies that protect youth such as keeping parks tobacco-free, supporting safe zoning, and encouraging local businesses to practice responsible alcohol and tobacco sales.
- Investing in Our Kids: Civic leaders decide where community funds go. When our local government prioritizes public parks, community spaces, and youth activities, it gives our kids positive, safe places to gather and grow.
- Connecting Public Efforts: Government partners help align local prevention programs with county-wide health initiatives, ensuring that youth wellbeing remains a top priority for local leadership.
When local governance actively supports community coalitions, it sends a clear message: our youth matter, and their health and safety are worth investing in.

Every individual that spends time with our youth, whether it’s being their coach, friend, or role model, can support strategies that reduce youth substance use and promote community health and safety.”
