Our very own staff reporter (and last summer’s intern), Ernesto Cisneros, has won two Best of School Newspapers Online (SNO) awards through his college newspaper, The Round Up, at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.
Ernesto has been working at The Round Up as a staff writer since August 2021, after his summer internship with The Questa Del Rio News. He won the awards for two articles, entitled “Efforts Continue to Departmentalize NMSU’s Borderlands and Ethnic Studies Program,” and “NMSU Faculty Have Mixed Reactions Towards Vaccine Requirements.”
To be eligible for the awards, a writer must meet certain criteria related to AP (Associated Press) style, overall structure, and formatting for the SNO platform, (which The Round Up operates under). Articles are nominated by newspaper editors and chosen by the SNO team for publication on their national platform, highlighting student work, at BestofSNO.com.
“I’m extremely grateful to have received these awards and grateful to those who continue to support my journalism journey. I want to especially thank my editors, Lou McCall (Questa Del Rio News) and Raul Flores (The Round Up), for helping and pushing me to become a stronger and better writer,” Ernesto said.
Ernesto will continue his work at The Round-Up next semester as their new political writer, covering politics and government issues at NMSU and the Associated Students of New Mexico State University.
