The Questa Varsity Volleyball Team is off to a strong start for the season. So far, the team has a strong winning record of 18-1, with their sole loss to the 4A Taos Varsity team. The team is currently in 1st place in the 2A district 5.
As of print time, the Ladycats are undefeated in their district playoffs, sitting 6-0. Overall this season, the team has lost 9 matches total, 3 of which belong to Taos. The Ladycats have not gone five matches all season, with a cumulative 54 match wins.
Head coach Michelle Garcia-Spears says her team will remain humble as they push forward towards state, “We will never underestimate any team on the court. We will bring our ‘a game’ every single time because teams play up when they play Questa. We don’t know which team will show up so we’re not letting our guard down.”
When asked if the team is concerned about any team specifically, Garcia-Spears says “all of them. We are not letting our guard down.”
This team has been playing together for years, with several seniors on the team, we ask if she’s concerned about the future of the program. “Our 7 seniors are phenomenal players but more than that, they’re leaders. They have taken the younger players under their wing and have been working to bring them in, teach them, and help them reach their potential. We will miss our seniors, but we know they’ve carved a path for the younger players to rise.”
As of print time, the Questa Ladycats are on a 12-game winning streak, with four games left to go. The remaining games include:
10/29 @ Mora at 6 p.m.
11/1 vs Mesa Vista at 6 p.m.
11/5 @ McCurdy at 6 p.m.
11/7 @ Penasco at 6 p.m.
The State Playoffs will be from November 14-16. The first round will be at Rio Rancho High School, Cleveland High School, and Bernalillo High School. The final and last round will be at the Rio Rancho Event Center.
