Local author, artist and Questa del Rio News columnist Ellen Wood will mark two major milestones this September with an artistic recognition in Taos and the release of her third book.
Wood will be honored Friday, Sept. 5, as one of three first Friday artists at the Taos Artist Collective Gallery. Later in the month, she will launch her new book, Five Tibetan Rites – The Right Way, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Questa Public Library.
Wood, 88, is known in northern New Mexico for her writing, art and spiritual teachings. Her latest book focuses on the Five Tibetan Rites, a series of exercises once practiced by Tibetan monks that are believed to promote rejuvenation, vitality and mental clarity.
Her interest in the rites grew after personal health challenges. Following her mother’s decline from Alzheimer’s disease, Wood began experiencing memory issues herself. Although a medical evaluation showed no signs of impairment, she was denied long-term care insurance, a turning point that pushed her deeper into spiritual practice.
Wood credits meditation, affirmations and daily practice of the Tibetan Rites with helping her regain sharpness and energy. She began the regimen in 2004, at age 68, and now, approaching 89, she said she feels healthier than she did decades earlier.
Her new book details both her personal journey and instructions for practicing the rites. Spiral-bound for ease of use, it is available at www.growyoungerwithellenwood.com.
The September events, organizers say, highlight Wood’s dual role in the community as both a creative force and a source of inspiration for those seeking resilience and spiritual renewal.
