The Questa Ladycats varsity volleyball team is entering the final stretch of the regular season after a strong campaign marked by key performances from veteran players, contributions across the lineup, and continued support from the Questa community. With senior night approaching and three regular-season matches on the schedule, the Ladycats are focused on finishing strong and maintaining their position in District 6-1A.
The team’s success has extended beyond the court. On Saturday, Oct. 24, the junior varsity and varsity teams celebrated homecoming while hosting their annual Dig Pink volleyball game, raising money for the family of the late Jesse Medina, who died of cancer, and Kim Santistevan, a Questa High School alumna who is battling cancer. The fundraiser reflected the program’s commitment to supporting families in the community.
Several players have helped drive the varsity team’s success throughout the season. Senior Esperanza Vallejos has been a standout at the net, averaging 2.0 kills per set with a .314 hitting percentage. Junior Maliyah Dominguez has anchored the back row, averaging 4.8 digs per set, while junior Allison Segura has contributed from the serving line with 31 aces and has recorded 119 assists.
Senior leaders Mia Ramos, Melinda Rael and Mariana Ortega have also played important roles in the Ladycats’ season. Ramos, an outside hitter, Rael and Ortega, defensive specialists, bring experience and leadership to the varsity lineup. Their contributions and support for their teammates have helped strengthen team chemistry and sustain the Ladycats’ competitive play as the season winds down.
The Ladycats suffered a 3-1 loss to Mora on Oct. 27 before continuing their schedule against New Mexico School for the Deaf on Oct. 28 where they won 3-0. As the regular season comes to a close, the team will look to build on its strengths and carry its momentum into the final matches.
The Ladycats celebrated senior night Thursday, Oct. 29, at home against Mesa Vista. Questa will now face Des Moines Monday, Nov. 2, at 5 p.m., before closing out the regular season in Peñasco Thursday, Nov. 5, at 5 p.m.
The team is coached by Michelle Spears, and Sasha Martinez.
