It’s unprecedented for corporations and businesses to get involved in providing support, assistance, or helping to close gaps. That is not the case with Kit Carson Electrictrical Cooperative (KCEC). For the Cooperative, supporting and helping the community is the norm.
Since February, the Cooperative announced that it would start mitigation work to the local forests where their lines transfer power. “Our crews are working around the clock to ensure our infrastructure’s reliability and our communities’ safety. We recognize that preparing for fire season requires a year-round mindset, so our communities are ready for potential forest fires and extreme weather events,” said KCEC CEO Luis A. Reyes in a release in early March.
Fast forward to the more pressing and concerning threats to our community, including the federal layoffs across the region, the Cooperative announced they would be working with customers who lost their jobs from federal employment. All employees who were separated from their positions have been encouraged to contact the Cooperative to set up a plan to ensure their electricity, gas, and internet remain connected as they search for work.
In addition to the recent efforts, the Cooperative has also partnered with the Taos Community Foundation (TCF) to provide food vouchers for families who have been impacted by the federal layoffs. “Our communities are directly impacted by decisions made at the federal level. As a community, we need to address the effects of these federal cuts and support those affected. We can do a lot of work locally to create a positive impact. Our partnership with TCF shows our communities and members that we can achieve great things when we work together. Our members deserve a better quality of life for their families, and we are here to support them,” Reyes said.
“We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to assist those impacted by the recent federal cuts. Many individuals facing job separation have families relying on them for essential support. Our partnership with KCEC highlights the increasing need for community collaboration. At the Taos Community Foundation, we have an open-door policy and are here to help our communities in any way possible,” said TCF CEO CJ Grace.
