The community of Questa has been rallying to keep the BestCare Pharmacy’s doors open for the past several months. Petitions have circulated across the community, gathering signatures from people who want to express their interest in keeping the pharmacy doors open.
Advocates have called on community members to contact the Governor and state leadership to voice their concerns with the pharmacy closing its doors.
According to a study published by Universal Drugstore, an international prescription service provider, New Mexico has the second highest pharmacy shortages in the nation. In Taos County, the next nearest pharmacy options are located an hour away for most residents.
The BestCare Pharmacy in Angel Fire shuttered its doors in late 2024, requiring residents to transfer prescriptions and travel further to receive their medications.
When we looked deeper into the pharmacy’s parent company, it appears it’s privately owned, with six rural New Mexico locations: in Deming, Springer, Mora, Lordsburg, and Chama.
When asked about the situation, BestCare Pharmacy replied that the regulation and licensing department is threatening their license in Questa, however, they don’t specify why.
We reached out to the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department to ask why the pharmacy in Questa was in jeopardy, and we have yet to hear back.
An email on March 20 was obtained by the Questa del Rio News from Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, confirming the BestCare Pharmacy is under investigation by the Board of Pharmacy, saying while keeping the Questa pharmacy is an important priority, the governor cannot interfere with the ongoing investigation.
