Holy Cross Medical Center to Manage Taos Orthopedic Institute, Adds New Specialists

Residents in the Taos County area will soon have broader access to specialized medical care closer to home. Effective March 1, 2026, Holy Cross Medical Center will assume management of the Taos Orthopaedic Institute clinic operations, a move designed to strengthen and expand orthopedic services throughout Northern New Mexico.

For over 25 years, Taos Orthopaedic Institute has been a trusted provider of orthopedic care in the region. Under the new management structure, longtime providers Dr. Dan Guttmann and Dr. Sean Marvil will continue to serve their patients, while Holy Cross Medical Center works to integrate the clinic into its broader healthcare system to streamline local services.

The transition brings a significant expansion in surgical specialties, which will reduce the need for local patients to travel long distances for advanced procedures. Among the new offerings is a comprehensive foot and ankle program led by fellowship-trained surgeons Dr. Robert Leland and Dr. Alejandro Miranda. Their services will include total ankle replacements, treatment for sports-related injuries such as Achilles tendon conditions, and corrective surgeries for bunions, flat feet, and high arches.

In April, the medical center will also welcome Dr. Sean Griggs, a fellowship-trained specialist in hand, wrist, and elbow surgery. Dr. Griggs will provide care for fractures, trauma, and chronic arthritis conditions affecting the upper extremities, further rounding out the specialized care available within the county.

James Kiser, Chief Executive Officer of Holy Cross Medical Center, expressed enthusiasm for the merger. He noted that bringing the institute into the Holy Cross family of care allows the organization to build on a strong foundation while supporting the physicians who have already served the community for decades. Dr. Dan Guttmann added that the institute remains a center of excellence for sports medicine and joint replacement, calling it a privilege to continue serving the local area.

Sue Romansky, Chief Operating Officer of Holy Cross Medical Center, emphasized that having these specialized services available locally is a major milestone for regional health. She noted that patients should not have to travel to larger cities to receive high-level orthopedic reconstruction or hand surgery.

While the management of the clinic is changing, patients will continue to receive their routine care at the Taos Orthopaedic Institute practice, with all surgical procedures performed at Holy Cross Hospital. Community members can find more information or schedule an appointment by calling (888) 758-0009 or visiting the hospital’s website.
