Though the election for Taos County sheriff is still more than a year away, Jason Rael is wasting no time building momentum and engaging with voters throughout the county.

Rael, who currently serves as marshal for the Town of Red River and is also president of the Questa Independent School District Board, announced his candidacy earlier this year. Since then, he has been a regular presence at community events across Taos County, listening to residents’ concerns and sharing his vision for public safety.

On July 19, Rael hosted a meet-and-greet at the Eagles Club in Taos. He then went to Costilla to the Torres Ranch Car Show, spending the day speaking with attendees about his priorities if elected. He emphasized community collaboration and a proactive approach to law enforcement.

“This campaign will never be about ‘me,’” Rael wrote on his public Facebook page. “It will always be about how ‘we’ can work together to improve Taos County.”

Rael has also rode in the Fourth of July parade in Red River, continuing what he describes as an effort to stay present and accessible to the public.

A fifth-generation Taoseño, Rael lives in Questa with his wife and two children. He brings nearly two decades of law enforcement experience to the race, having served as a deputy and sergeant with the Taos County Sheriff’s Office before becoming marshal of Red River.

“My decision to run for sheriff is driven by the overwhelming support I have received from my family, my friends and community members—people all throughout Taos County,” Rael said.

The election for Taos County sheriff is scheduled for November 2026. Until then, Rael said he plans to continue visiting communities across the region and speaking with residents about their priorities for the next sheriff.
“I look forward to earning your trust and your vote,” he said.

Incumbent Sheriff Steve Miera has not yet announced his bid for reelection, however, says he is interested in speaking with our publication for an exclusive interview in our next edition.
