Ladycats Battle Through January, Look Ahead After McCurdy Loss

The Questa Ladycats dropped a close district contest Saturday night (Jan. 31), falling to McCurdy 44–40 on Jan. 31 to close out a demanding January schedule.

The loss capped a month filled with tight games and strong efforts for the Ladycats, who enter February with a 10–9 overall record and a 1–3 mark in district play.

Questa opened January with setbacks against Roy/Mosquero (52–27) and Springer (43–37) before responding with a 48–42 win over Dulce. The Ladycats then suffered losses to Mesa Vista (62–32) and McCurdy (35–33) but rebounded with a dominant 54–11 victory against Antonito.

Momentum continued to build as Questa earned back-to-back wins over Clayton (42–38) and Escalante (50–44). The Ladycats were unable to sustain the streak, falling to Mora (57–50) and Mesa Vista (69–45) before Tuesday’s four-point loss to McCurdy.

Despite the challenges of the month, January proved memorable for senior Alyse Lovato, who scored her 1,500th career point on Jan. 29. Lovato, a fifth-year varsity player, reached the milestone while continuing to serve as a leader for the Ladycats.

“Every time I step on the court for a game, I get that fire in my heart and all I want to do is win,” Lovato said.
A tri-athlete who also competes in soccer and track, Lovato credited her support system for helping her reach the milestone.
“It felt amazing to hit my 1,500th point because I have so many supporters behind me,” Lovato said. “That always keeps me going and makes me want to push harder to make them proud.”

The Ladycats will look to bounce back and improve their district standing when they travel to Escalante for their next game Feb. 3.
