Living Word Ministries Pursues Emergency Shelter Status

As wildfire season continues to hit communities, causing devastating damage to homes and property, Living Word Ministries in Questa is taking proactive steps to become an official emergency shelter for the community.

The church is currently evaluating its facilities and grounds to meet emergency preparedness standards. Pastor Gayle and Pastor Peter with Living Word Ministries said the effort is part of a broader collaboration with local organizations, community groups and churches to establish a reliable, community-based evacuation site for northern Taos County residents.

“Our communit’ty Office of Emergency Management in May.

The church is working to ensure best practices for operating shelters during emergencies, including fire evacuations, and how to support displaced residents effectively.

Organizers say community participation is essential. “We can’t just have buildings ready—we need trained people ready to help,” said Pastor Gayle.

Living Word Ministries’ involvement represents one piece of a larger puzzle, with other churches, community organizations and the Village of Questa who are all working together, taking on different roles in Questa’s emergency response strategy.
“We’re stronger when we work together,” said Pastor Gayle. “This is about neighbors helping neighbors when it matters most.”
