On Sunday, March 2, around 8:20 p.m., a tragic single car crash occurred near 175 Cabresto Road within the Questa Village limits. Questa Police responded and found three occupants in a vehicle, one of whom was a minor. All occupants were transported to the hospital, one by ambulance and two on Flight for Life.
Unfortunately, 19-year-old Nicholas “Nicky” Baca, a student at Questa Jr./ Sr. High School succumbed to his injuries and passed away on March 4 after a short stay in an Albuquerque hospital.
This is the second time a fatal car crash has occurred on Cabresto Road in the past several years.
In May of 2021, 34-year-old Questa native Enriquetta Vigil was killed in an OHV accident with her cousins.
Questa local Frank Rael, who lives on Cabresto Road, took to Facebook to express his frustration and anger about the speed issues on the road. In addition to the two fatal accidents, he says his neighbors and family have lost their pets to speeding cars.
His post went on to say he was starting a petition to have the village install speed bumps on the road in order to prevent speeding vehicles from crashing or hitting animals near the road.
“The speed limit is 25 miles per hour and people drive 65 miles per hour,” he shared. His post continued, “I am sure I am not the only one on Cabresto Road who is afraid to pull out of my driveway. I don’t care if you disagree with me, but you’re not the one with a descanso (roadside memorial) in your driveway that reminds you of what you have witnessed, and I have to live with this for the rest of my life.”
His post had 138 likes and 52 comments from people sharing their agreement with this proposal to install speed bumps on the road.
We reached out to the Village of Questa to inquire if a petition has been submitted and as of press time, nothing had been turned in.
We will continue to follow the development of this story in future articles.
