John Treadwell Nichols, author of The Milagro Beanfield War, passed peacefully on November 27, 2023 at 83, on a last beautiful day in autumn and in the comfort of his Taos home. He was an accomplished American author, amazing father, grandfather, and friend.
John has called Taos home since 1969 when he settled here with his young family. He was an avid naturalist that loved the mountains, mesas, rivers, and streams. And he loved the people, hearing your stories, sharing in your struggles, and celebrating the small miracles.
Nichols will also be remembered by his family and plentiful circles of friends for his love of music, literature, and life. His unmatched sense of humor will live on in the laughs and memories of those dearest to him.
John is Survived by his brother Tim Nichols and his son Jamal, children Luke Nichols and Tania Harris along with their mother Ruth Harding Nichols. His granddaughter Lucinda Nichols and her mother Dale Lovage. As well as Tania’s husband Marco Harris and their children Solana and Sierra.
His family would like to thank the town of Taos and its people who took such good care of him. His friends who brought him joy with stimulating conversations, abundant laughter, and guitar jam sessions. And those he never met but who were connected through his work and words.
We would also like to thank Tim Rivera for taking the time personally to bring John peace with this process and Rivera Family funeral for so respectfully carrying out his wishes.
A Memorial Celebration of John Nichols is being planned by the family to be held in the warmth of spring. Details of the service will be made public in the near future.
