Questa del Rio News Starts 2025 Strong

As newsrooms across the country are continuing to shrink and in some cases disappear, the Questa del Rio News is excited to take on a new year with renewed hope and excitement on the heels of our tireless work in 2024.

Last year we experienced late nights and very few days off to ensure we were able to keep the community informed on current and newsworthy information.

We covered Bernie Torres and his crew as they played Los Dias for New Year’s Eve, an age-old New Mexico tradition. We shared the story of Dominick Apodaca taking ownership of his family business, the Sangre de Cristo Market. We shared how Red River transitioned to Mayfest in the Mountains
We looked at the hard work of DeeDee and Corey Mead as they worked to repair and reopen the Cerro VFW. We received news that the U.S. Library of Congress was including our stories as an official historical record of Questa.

We covered the stories of endurance, dedication, and perseverance in our Representando Series.
We saw the work of 75 years of service to the community by the Rael family, who run Questa Hardware that was started by Lucy and Malaquias Rael. We saw the Questa Wildcat Cheer Team participate in tournaments, taking second place at state.

We covered the Questa VFW nearly closing its doors, to increasing its membership so it could remain open per statewide VFW bylaws. We covered the annual pilgrimage from Costilla to Questa. We looked at the Costilla gas station and how they work to keep the Duran business thriving, in hopes of selling to a lucky new owner.

We covered the loose dog issue along North Kiowa Road, we followed the Kit Carson Electric Cooperative green hydrogen project, up to and including the recent funding of $231 million, which will create 350 local jobs.

We saw the Questa football team get to the first round of state and we saw the Questa Ladycat volleyball team go to state and get to three games.

We heard from 105-year-old veteran Valdemar DeHerrera about family and faith, and we saw Living Word Ministries and Freedom Questa come together to support the communities in their churches together and separately.

We saw the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church build a new rectory with the labor and fundraising from the local parishioners.

We heard from Berlinda and Myra about Berlinda’s Mis Crismas memories and we grieved with our local first responders when they lost their brother Josiah Mandonado.
And…
and…
and…..
Because there are so many stories we covered, so many lives, people, perspectives, experiences, histories, and stories we have covered which are too numerous to be listed here. Impactful, powerful stories—and it’s all because of you.

When you contact us to pitch your stories, when you send us tips and ideas, when you share our stories or share your comments, you help us know what you like to read, and what you don’t. It helps guide us on our next story with context and background, knowing where to be sensitive and where to be strong. It’s because of you, and your engagement, and your support that helps us continue to bring you the Questa del Rio News.

In September, our publication received phenomenal news that we were one of the 205 small, local newsrooms across the U.S. who received a grant from Press Forward, a national funder that supports the nationwide movement to strengthen communities by reinvigorating local news. Our publication was rewarded with a grant to use over two years to help us grow our advertisers and revenue streams. You can learn more about Press Forward online (pressforward.news)

In addition, our December fundraising was a huge success, raising more than $20,000. We are so incredibly grateful to the donors who helped us reach this ambitious goal, they are listed page 3.
In a time where it’s difficult to find reliable and relevant sources of truth, especially when false information and social posts on the internet are routinely shared, spreading misinformation which only further divides us as a people, our publication is committed to standing with and for our people, giving you a voice, and being your voice when necessary, while providing accurate, clear, and unbiased news our readers are entitled to.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your support. It’s because of your support that we’re able to bring on new staff and sustain our publication’s footprint coverage in this constantly evolving news landscape.
