Town Of Red River Awarded Over $2 Million For Brandenburg Park Improvements

The Town of Red River announced in a press release on Jan. 18 that it has been awarded $2,037,874 through the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration’s (DFA) City Parks Improvements Grant Program.

The City Parks Improvement Program is designed to increase recreational opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities, revitalize and modernize existing park facilities, address safety concerns within city parks, and foster community engagement and a sense of place.

The Brandenburg Park Revitalization Project was selected as part of New Mexico MainStreet’s program in 2023, which underscores the park’s significance to Red River’s community and economy. NMMS’s Frontier and Rural Communities project awards support to communities under 50,000 in population during a 12- to 18-month affiliation, focused on one economic development project within a traditional or historic village or town center.

This funding is part of the 2024 Capital Outlay Projects Senate Bill 275, signed into law by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, and it’s dedicated to enhancing the quality and accessibility of city park facilities across New Mexico.

“This investment in Brandenburg Park is a tremendous step forward for our community,” said Director of Economic Development & Tourism for the Town of Red River, Max Khudiakov. “The improvements will not only enhance recreational opportunities for our residents but will also strengthen Red River’s status as a top-tier tourism destination. We are grateful for the support from the State of New Mexico and the City Parks Improvement Program.”

Mayor Linda Calhoun echoed these sentiments, stating, “Brandenburg Park is the heart of our town, a place where our residents gather and where visitors experience the unique charm of Red River. This funding will allow us to modernize and improve the park while preserving its character and importance to our local economy. We appreciate the collaboration with New Mexico MainStreet and the State of New Mexico in making this vision a reality.”

The release goes on to say Brandenburg Park plays a vital role in hosting major annual festivals, including the 8750′ BBQ & Music Festival and Oktoberfest. The town says it sees approximately 450,000 visitors each year, and this revitalization of Brandenburg Park is expected to enhance the town’s appeal as a premier destination for both residents and tourists.

Project planning is underway, and more information about it will be announced soon.
