On Jan. 27, Questa Future Famers of America (FFA) officers joined other FFA chapters from across the state to visit the State Legislature to advocate for agriculture and agriculture education. Throughout the day, FFA members met with their legislators, attended a House or Senate Session, and explored the Capitol building.
Questa FFA officers had the honor of meeting with Sen. Lee Jaramillo, who has served in the legislature for six years. Jaramillo introduced himself as the “Voice of Latinos”, calling himself an advocate for all New Mexicans and their stories. During the meeting, he continuously showed his support for the FFA program, the importance of water, and the preservation of agricultural education. He then asked Questa members if they had a question or concern to share with him.
FFA members asked Jaramillo, “Many small family farms and ranches in New Mexico are facing economic pressure. What ideas do you have to help younger generations sustain and grow these operations?” His response, “Farming and ranching are just as important as a college degree. We have to get kids excited so that our traditions may live on and sustain our families and communities.”
Officers also had the honor of meeting Sen. Bobby Gonzales, who has served in the New Mexico State Legislature for 30 years. Gonzales expressed his support of the program, often recalling memories of his childhood and his own participation in FFA. He also presented each member with a little gift for taking the time to visit with him.
During the House session, members from the legislative body voiced strong support for FFA and state funding for the program. Lawmakers emphasized the organization’s role in developing youth leadership, instilling a strong work ethic and contributing to the the future of our state’s self sustainability, economy, and the preservation of our culture.
