What began as a fundraiser to help cover graduation expenses will now benefit an eighth grader in a neighboring community who is battling cancer.

The Senior Class of 2026 at Questa High School held a 50/50 raffle during Saturday, Feb. 21 for the final game of the season against Peñasco. While the raffle was originally intended to support graduation costs, class members voted to donate their share of the proceeds to Elijah Abeyta, an eighth grader from Peñasco who is battling Hodgkin lymphoma.

Ariana Medina, president of the Class of 2026, said the idea came after students saw a post on Facebook about a recent enchilada dinner fundraiser for Elijah.

“We were scrolling through Facebook, and we came across their enchilada dinner that they were doing for Elijah,” Medina said. “We came up with the idea to donate the 50/50 money, so that we can leave an impact on not only our community, but also theirs. Our class wanted to do a good deed before we graduate.”

Medina said the decision reflects the values of a small district where community ties run deep.
“It’s important that our small district sticks together.”

The raffle awarded 50% of the proceeds to the winning ticket holder, along with a $50 gift card to Rosie’s Smokehouse. The remaining 50% was donated to Elijah, along with an additional gift certificate to the restaurant for Elijah and his family.
In a joint statement, senior class sponsors Ms. Vialpando and Mrs. Cintas encouraged community members to gather at the game to foster local spirit.

“While there is so much bad happening in the world around us, let’s use this game as an opportunity to bring our communities together for this young man,” the message stated. “At the end of the day, all we have is each other.”
Medina also shared a message of encouragement for Elijah and his family.

“We are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers,” she said. “You are stronger than you know. Stay strong, Elijah. Questa is standing behind you.”
