Mrs. Santana Santistevan is the new National Honor Society (NHS) sponsor and she and the NHS student members have been busy!

In October, the QHS NHS hosted a concession and fundraising stand at the Dig Pink volleyball game, (see story page 19). The group decided that they would like to put the money toward families in need to keep warm this winter. Enough money was raised to purchase two loads of firewood.

Recently, the NHS also hosted a CAV (Community Against Violence) fundraiser in which Alta Vista Elementary as well as the Jr./Sr. High School participated. For over 39 years, CAV has served as a nonprofit agency providing emergency shelter, advocacy, and counseling services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Taos County. The students collected hundreds of items from the CAV wish list.

While induction into the NHS is the true mark of academic achievement, it goes far beyond a report card. All student members must also embody the program’s respective pillars—ideals such as scholarship, service, leadership, and character—and they must continue demonstrating these traits in their communities.

If you need of firewood, or know someone does, please contact Mrs. Santistevan at ssantistevan@questa.k12.nm.us or at (575) 586-1604, ext. 2006. If you need CAV services, please call their 24-hour Helpline at (575) 758-9888 or their textline at (575) 770-2706.
