Questa Schools Implement ‘No Cellphone’ Policy for Students

In late September, Questa Independent Schools sent a letter to parents, detailing a new “No Cellphone” policy for all students, effective immediately.

According to the letter, “the purpose of this policy is to enhance the learning environment by reducing distractions and interruptions caused by student cellphone use during school hours. Our goal is to promote student engagement, safety, and academic success. We believe that limiting cellphone use during the school day will help your child remain focused on their educational activities.”

The policy will be implemented across all grade levels and will be in effect in all school premises during school hours to include classrooms, hallways, restrooms, libraries, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and any school-sponsored events

How will cellphones will be managed on school property?

  • High school: Cell phones must be turned off or set to silent mode and stored in lockers, backpacks, or other designated areas during school hours
  • Junior high school: Cell phones must be turned in to the designated area during school hours
  • Elementary school: No cell phones are allowed. Any phones brought to school must be turned in to the office and will be returned at the end of the day
  • How will the policy be enforced?
  • First violation: The cellphone will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of the school day. A verbal warning will be issued.
  • Second violation: The cellphone will be confiscated and held in the school office. A parent or guardian must pick up the device, and the student will receive a written warning.
  • Subsequent violations: Further violations may result in additional disciplinary actions, including detention or suspension. A meeting between the parent or guardian and school officials will be required.

While the policy will be strictly adhered to, there will be exceptions to the policy, including medical necessity, as required and directed by a health professional. Students may also use their phones in emergency situations and for educational purposes as approved by an educator.
