The Village of Questa has a new chief of police. Esequiel Romero was sworn in at Tuesday (Jan. 27) Village Council Meeting. Former Chief Ronald Montez left the agency after being named police chief for the Town of Taos.
Romero says gratitude is what he feels most when he reflects on his more than a decade in law enforcement.
Romero has served in law enforcement for 10½ years, including eight years with the Taos County Sheriff’s Office and 2½ years with the Red River Police Department. Born and raised in Questa, Romero said returning to serve his hometown in a leadership role is something he takes pride in.
“It makes me feel grateful and very proud,” Romero said. “My hope is always to leave something better than when you found it.”
The Questa Police Department currently consists of a chief and four officers, with one additional position open. When fully staffed, the department will have five officers.
Romero emphasized the importance of transparency and communication with the public, particularly during critical incidents. While officers are often trained to err on the side of caution when sharing information, Romero said he and one or two other officers are interested in completing a public information officer, or PIO, course.
“When things do happen, we want to make sure we’re being transparent and communicating properly with the community,” he said.
Romero also acknowledged the personal sacrifices that come with a career in law enforcement, noting the constant demands of the job and the toll it can take on family life.
“You’re always on call, always out and about,” he said. “I missed out on so much of my son’s childhood.”
Romero said he is grateful for the continued support of his family throughout his career, adding that the understanding and patience of loved ones are essential in the profession.
“I have to thank my family for being supportive through my entire career,” he said. “They deal with a lot that comes with this job.”
