“Winnie Day” in Red River is observed on February 8. It was designated “Winnie Hamilton Day” in the town, celebrating the life of Winifred Oldham Hamilton, a prominent figure in the Red River community who owned the Tall Pine Resort until her passing, January 19, 1998. She took over the resort from her uncles who first established it in the 1800s.
The day was officially proclaimed by Mayor John Saint on her 90th birthday, February 8, 1991. At that time, the community gathered in a big party in the Mine Shaft Theater and the town hosted plays in Winnie Hamilton’s honor.
Winnie Hamilton was an educator who taught in various communities before settling back down in her hometown to teach at the Red River Schoolhouse
Many people were in attendance at Saturday’s celebration to remember the life, stories, and contributions Winnie Hamilton made to the Red River community, including Kathee and Mike Oldham, and family members of Winnie Hamilton. Lance and Terry Loudder, the new owners of the Tall Pine Resort, were also in attendance.
February 8 of this year would have been Winnie Hamilton’s 124th birthday.
