Red River Mining Map For Sale At Red River Dreams Online Store

By MIKAYLA ORTEGA
Replicas of a map dating back to 1895 showing the mining claims is up for sale! The map shows dozens of mining sites around the Red River area, which were established as the Keystone Mining District, as defined by Red River, Elizabethtown, and LaBelle miners in 1895.

The map illustrates the mining boom region (which quickly busted) and is virtually untraceable now, in modern times. The mine sites on the map include Spokane, Midnight, Maggie M, Charlotte, Arapahoe, Tribley, War Eagle, Northern Light, Pay Role (sic), Johnson, Sunset, Big Chief, Placer, Park, Rosita, Republic, Edison, Fox, Surety, Golden Eagle, Silent Partner, Divide, Iron Mask, Denmark, Climax, Griterian, Aztec Tunnel, Hamilton, Alta Vista, Montezuma, Coxey, Colorado, Ranger, Belle de Mexico, La Veta, Mammouth, Emma, and Gold Bug.

Miners built log cabins on their claims and established town sites at Anchor and Midnight. In 1894, gold was discovered by Ira Wing along Comanche Creek in today’s Valle Vidal section of the Carson National Forest.
The mine was shut down due to water problems, poor ore quality, and low production in the early 1900s. In 1910, gold mining in the Red River area was revived due to new discoveries, improved economic conditions, and better extraction methods.

The map is 16” x 20” and is not framed. The print sells for $27.50 and can be purchased here: https://tinyurl.com/bp7hm2ch
