Tibetan Buddhist Prayer Gathering For World Peace June 13-15

A three-day retreat of Tibetan Buddhist prayers for world peace will be held June 13, 14, and 15 at the Kagyu Mila Guru Stupa, just north of Questa in the El Rito neighborhood.

The event, known as Monlam, invites participants to join in traditional aspiration prayers and community celebration rooted in centuries-old Buddhist practice.

Led by resident teacher Lama Karma Chopal, the retreat is open to the public and includes chanting sessions in both Tibetan and English, guided meditations, and a final day potluck open to families, friends, and neighbors.
“This world is full of intense change and suffering—from environmental crises to political conflict,” Lama Chopal said. “This Monlam is a time to gather in compassion and wisdom, to offer healing prayers for the world and ourselves.”

Monlam means “path of aspiration,” referring to a prayer tradition dating back over 600 years to Tibetan New Year festivals. Originating in Bodhgaya, India—where the Buddha attained enlightenment—the Monlam has expanded globally, with gatherings now held across Asia and the West.

The Questa retreat follows this tradition with morning and afternoon sessions with breaks, concluding on Sunday afternoon with a celebratory community potluck featuring music and conversation.

The event will take place outdoors beside the stupa, a sacred monument symbolizing the awakened mind and heart of the Buddha. Seating cushions and chairs will be available, though guests are welcome to bring their own. Attendees are encouraged to bring water, sun protection, and a mask if they choose.

Texts for the prayers will be provided. As is customary, those moved to make an offering to the teacher may do so via a donation box or directly to Lama Chopal. Participation is free and open to all, regardless of background or faith.

“This is our third year gathering at the stupa to pray together for peace,” said Lama Chopal. “It’s also a joyful time to join in community, share food and music, and celebrate our shared wish for harmony.”
Volunteers are welcome to help with the event. For more information and directions to the KMG stupa, contact info@earthjourney.org or call Gabrielle at (575) 770-1682.

“May all beings have happiness and the cause of happiness. May they be free from suffering and the cause of suffering. May they never part from the happiness that knows no suffering. May they dwell in equanimity, free from attachment and aversion to things near and far.”
