The closest, naked-eye planetary conjunction of the entire year occurs on January 22 between Venus and Saturn. Venus is our most evolved, beautiful, and sacred planet while Saturn is our most troublesome, burdensome, and serious planet. Both will be in Aquarius, the sign of humanity, expansion, and joy. The Sun and the Moon will also be in that sign, lending their light, reflection, and energy to this union.
In esoteric astrology Venus rules Gemini, our sign of education and communication, while Saturn rules Capricorn, our sign of long-term-karma and long delays. This combination suggests a series of slow steps toward the Aquarian goal of brotherhood, coming together and working in groups, recognizing that indeed, we are all One. Under the influence of Saturn, it may feel like these steps are heavy, ponderous, hard work, and no fun at all.
The lesson of this Saturn is to accept our karma and welcome the opportunity to do good in the world for all of humanity, not merely to serve ourselves. Aquarius is the sign of Knowledge: pouring forth knowledge for spiritually thirsty people. When we accept our hardships, rather than merely seeking relief, we work off karma, while our willingness to participate in our own lives can literally take the sting out of Life.
The softening effect of our most famous love planet nudges this humorless, sometimes stilted planet into socializing with pleasure and turning hard times into brief, shining moments of the mere joy of interaction with a fellow human being. At least, this is the potential we have with this union. It also reminds us to “Love our Neighbor as Ourselves,” especially during this unique meeting between two very different planets. It can lighten the load, encourage us to pour forth the love and joy of coexistence with friends and neighbors on the only Blue Planet in our galaxy.
