Vida del Norte Rebuilds Momentum to Support Youth and Community Wellness

After a two-year funding lapse, the Vida del Norte Coalition is back with renewed momentum, strengthening its mission to support youth and expand substance misuse prevention efforts in northern Taos County.

First envisioned by community members in 2014 and officially funded in 2017, the coalition faced a setback in 2022 when funding lapsed. The pause slowed initiatives, but renewed efforts have since helped bring programs back to life.

“We are proud to say that we are moving forward again—creating support for our youth while addressing the challenges of substance misuse and mental health,” Maria Gonzalez of Vida del Norte said.

For six consecutive summers, Vida del Norte has partnered with Localogy to host summer camps for local children. Last year, the coalition launched an afterschool program that served 25 students from the Questa Independent School District.
This fall, the program returned with 15 students already enrolled. The new year brings a more structured format, with enrichment activities designed to strengthen literacy and build skills in science and math. Students will take part in themed weeks, complete with experiments and Thursday field trips, making learning hands-on and fun.

The coalition is also focusing on creative outreach. On Oct. 4, Vida del Norte will host a community car show, blending classic cars with a serious purpose—raising awareness about substance misuse and mental health while fundraising for the afterschool program. It will be held at the Questa Business Park from noon to 5 p.m.

Later this month, on Oct. 18, the coalition will hold its annual retreat. Traditionally hosted in February, the event was moved earlier this year to help with planning for upcoming initiatives.

Vida del Norte also continues to prioritize education. Upcoming workshops will cover Narcan use, harm reduction, mental health, and substance misuse prevention, giving community members tools to save lives and reduce stigma.

The coalition’s renewed activity underscores its commitment to the well-being of Questa’s youth and families. Through community partnerships and innovative programming, Vida del Norte aims to build a healthier, more resilient future.
